ACHD Potpourri for the General Cardiologist
Guest Editors: Dr Foo Jie Sheng and Prof Tan Ju Le, National Heart Centre Singapore
The care of adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) in the Asia-Pacific (AP) region is as diverse as its cultures, societies, economies and populations. In many countries, the number of ACHD patients is fast overtaking their paediatric counterparts as advancements in paediatric cardiology, intensive care and cardiac surgery have significantly improved the survival rates of children born with congenital heart defects.
Many adults with corrected and uncorrected congenital defects are not only surviving but thriving when they are provided with appropriate and timely options given the advances in imaging, therapies, such as congenital and electrophysiological interventions, and development of new medications for pulmonary hypertension and heart failure.
This special ACHD collection of JAPSC hopes to shed light on some aspects of the current state of ACHD care in the region, highlighting the gaps that need to be addressed, and propose actionable strategies to improve outcomes for our ACHD patients. We have invited ACHD experts to give their unique perspectives on the management of the more common ACHD conditions that will be of relevance to readers.
